| Loon Mountain goes green to keep our slopes white. |
Loon Mountain is dedicated to providing outstanding outdoor recreation to
our guests, while taking steps to protect our environment and our climate.
Here is an overview of Loon's current sustainable slopes initiatives.
Additional environmentally-friendly initiatives are planned to further Loon's
ongoing commitment to protect our most precious resource, the environment.
Please see 'What You Can Do to Help', below.
Loon's Green Initiatives include:
- Recycling & Waste Stream Reduction
- Increasing Energy Efficiency
- Improving Air Quality
- Supporting renewable energy by offering SkiGreen Tags
- Sponsoring the Kancamagus Highway, a National Scenic Byway, via the Adopt a Highway program, which helps to fund highway clean up efforts. Loon Mountain employees also help keep 'the Kanc' clean with an annual spring cleanup day in conjunction with local school children
- Endorsement of the National Ski Areas Association (NSAA) Environmental Charter
Recycling & Waste Stream Reduction
- Base lodge recycling program enables guests to recycle bottles and cans in the Octagon Base Lodge, Governor's Lodge and the new Pemigewasset Base Camp
- On-mountain lodges support recycling of glass and plastic bottles
- Wash-able plates and soup bowls are used in the Octagon Cafeteria, and all locations use or are switching to earth-friendly hot and cold cups and napkins
- Cardboard
- Steel
- More than 300 gallons of waste oil and vehicle fluids each year. Loon's Maintenance Center also has a 2,800-gallon oil-water separator, which can separate oil and other waste from water before it is flushed into the septic system.
- Motion sensor activated paper towel dispensers to limit paper towel use
Increasing Energy Efficiency
- Snowmaking improvements/upgrades to NH’s most-powerful snowmaking system in 2007-08 included new super-efficient Boyne Low E snow guns, which use approximately 40% less energy than conventional guns; 31 Ratnik snow guns; 10 new tower guns and new fan gun power sources located on Little Sister and the Loon Mountain Park. These allow Loon to make quality snow quickly and efficiently on both these trails, which need more snow to support terrain features.
Improvements for 2008-09 include 20 new proprietary Boyne high-output, energy-efficient fan guns, along with 50 new HKD Tower guns, which will add substantial firepower to Loon's already powerful snowmaking system. The HKDs will be placed on South Peak trails, and the Boyne guns are ear-marked for the signature Loon Mountain Park and trails on Loon Peak. - Conversion of all lighting over to compact fluorescent bulbs, which use approximately 75% less energy than incandescent bulbs
- Installation of highly-efficient Buderus boilers upgrades, installation of highly-efficient Marathon water heaters
- Motion sensors on restroom lights
- Installed ‘air curtains’ in the Governor’s Lodge Snowsports Area and Adaptive Program to better retain heat
- New, efficient windows and doors have been installed in the resort's administrative offices, Children's Center, and base lodges, making it easier for these facilities to retain heat.
Improving Air Quality
- Use of biodiesel mix to fuel grooming fleet and all off road equipment
- Anti-idling policy for company vehicles and anti-idling guest education through signage in skier drop off areas
- Lodging shuttles to minimize use of individual vehicles and limit vehicle emissions
Purchase a SkiGreen Tag for $2 and Support Wind Energy
1 SkiGreen Tag represents:» 100 kilowatt hours of wind energy
» Prevents 140 lbs. of global warming pollution or the equivalent of driving 150 miles in a vehicle that gets 21 mpg.
SkiGreen tags are certified by Green-e. Each contribution funds new wind energy generation on your behalf through SkiGreen, a program of the non-profit Bonneville Environmental Foundation. For more information, visit SkiGreen.org or call 1-866-BEF-TAGS.

What Can You Do to Help?
Please follow the Leave No Trace TM Principles when visiting Loon and other mountain resorts. Here is a list that combines these, Keep Winter Cool and other ideas that can help you help our environment and our climate. If we each do our part, together, we will make a difference!- Dispose of waste properly and never throw trash from a lift. Reduce, reuse and recycle when possible.
- Respect ski area boundaries. They are there for your safety as well as to protect wildlife.
- Be considerate of other guests and the quality their experience.
- If you are dropping off or waiting for passengers, turn off your vehicle’s engine. On cold mornings, limit the amount of warm up time for your vehicle. If your engine is idling for more than 10 seconds, you should turn it off to conserve fuel and limit global warming pollution.
- Turn off the lights when you leave a room. Whenever you turn a switch on, think about whether there is anything you can turn off.
- Use compact fluorescent light bulbs. They use up to 75% less electricity than incandescent light bulbs and will save you money on your home’s electric bill.
- When staying at a hotel or condominium, reuse linens to help conserve water and energy.
- Use wash-able dishware and silverware rather than paper and plastics.
- Carpool with family and friends whenever possible.
- When selecting your next vehicle, choose the most-efficient, least-polluting one that meets your needs.
- After the ski season remove roof racks and snow tires to improve your vehicle’s gas mileage and efficiency. It can save you 6% at the gas pump. Regular tune ups and replacement of air filters will help, too.
- Be an efficient consumer and choose the most energy efficient appliances and electronics that meet your needs. Unplug appliances and electronics when not in use.
- If your power company offers green power, consider switching some or all of your electricity to 'green' energy.
